ALASKA  PILOT CAR REGULATIONS
Information required
Company name, address, license and state ID for tractor & trailer, make-model, number axles, load description make and model, dates of movement, start and stop points, route desired, axle spacing & weights, tire width and load ratings, gross weight and overall dimensions.

When Permit is Needed
Distance to be traveled, route, and obstructions on route taken into consideration when determining need for permit.

Times of Movement
As set in permit
No travel on following holidays:
Memorial Day, Independance Day, Labor Day
No movement allowed from 12:00pm day preceeding holiday through daylight on day following holiday.
Holiday restrictions do not apply Oct 1 through April 15 from Fairbanks north on the Steese, Elliot and Dalton highways.
No travel 7:00am- 8:00am and 4:30pm - 6:00pm Monday- Friday in Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau urban areas.
No travel 6:00am - 8:00am, 11:30am - 1:00pm and 4:00pm - 7:00pm in Anchorage urban areas north to Palmer and Wasilla over 14’ wide.
No travel in Kitchikan from 7:00am - 8:00am, 12:00pm - 1:00pm, 4:30pm - 6:00pm
No travel in Palmer/Wasilla 6:00am- 8:00am, 11:30am - 1:00pm, 4:30pm - 6:00pm over 14’ wide or vehicles traveling less than 25mph.

Requirements for Load
Flags (16”x16” red or fluorescent orange) required on Vehicles with Load more than 10’ wide and overhang exceeding legal limits
Signs required on front and rear on loads over 8’6” wide and printed with the word(s) “OVERSIZE”, “OVERSIZE LOAD” OR “WIDE LOAD”
Signs shall be minimum of 48” wide, yellow background with black lettering 10” high and 2” brush stroke.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
Passenger car or truck cannot exceed unladen weight of 19,000 lbs.; Not less than 60” wide.
Vehicles must carry a red hand flag and bright orange safety vest or jacket.
Signs required on front and rear on loads over 8’6” wide and printed with the word(s) “OVERSIZE”, “OVERSIZE LOAD” OR “WIDE LOAD”
Signs shall be a minimum of 48” wide, yellow background with black lettering 10” high and 2” brush stroke.
Signs on escort vehicle will be mounted on the front of lead vehicleand on the rear of rear vehicle. Commercial vehicle insurance.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort per crewmember
Highly reflectorized jacket or vest
18” or 24” stop/slow paddle sign
Flashlight w/ red cone or lighted wand & extra batteries
1-5lb B:C fire extinguisher
3 bi-directional emergency retroreflective triangles
Operable CB radio (company radios are acceptable)
